Wilkinson grew into one of Sheffield’s prominent scissor makers after being established by Thomas Wilkinson in the early 1800s. By 1822, the company was producing scissors on Meadow Street before later shifting its workshops to Fitzwilliam Street and Workhouse Lane. The business earned significant recognition in 1839 when it received Royal Appointment status, and a year later moved to High Street, where it supplied high‑quality scissors, cutlery, and silverware to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
